Alston Moor Federation Logo Alston Primary School

Our Federation comprises three schools: Alston Primary School; Nenthead Primary School; and Samuel King’s School. Each of our schools are very small so we work as one federation to maximise learning and extraordinary opportunities for all of our pupils. We see the size of our schools as a real advantage.

The AMF Alston site is a busy one with the Alston Pre School located in the building as well as Children’s Centre activities overseen by Barnardos. We believe that the presence of these two organisations really strengthens what we can offer to our families and the wider community.

Each of our schools offers you all that you would expect from small welcoming settings. We are proud of the ‘family feel’ that we have created in the three schools and believe that each is the perfect environment in which young people can flourish. Our motto of ‘What starts here changes the world’ encompasses what we aim to achieve for our pupils – we support pupils to learn and achieve so that they can use education to enable choices when leaving our schools or moving to the next phase of education. We want your child’s time at school to be a special time where they are supported through a curriculum and extraordinary opportunities that make learning fun.

We serve the close-knit communities of Alston Moor and the upper Weardale and Teesdale valleys. Links with parents, carers and families are very strong and our schools are at the heart of our communities.. Students and staff know each other well. Our children feel secure and gain the skills, qualifications and confidence that they need to enjoy their lives outside and beyond school.

Local Offer

Children who are identified as having ‘Special or Additional Educational Needs’ are those who require teaching and learning programmes which are ‘additional to or different’ from their peers.

These can be intellectual, emotional, medical, behavioural or physical. Children may have Special Educational Needs or Additional Educational Needs throughout or at any time during their school career. Children with Special Needs are identified as early as possible in order to provide them with the extra support they require either in the classroom, individually or in a small group.

We follow the Local Authority guidelines and the ‘Code of Practice’ regarding the assessment and identification of children with Special Needs. We work closely with a variety of specialists (including the educational psychologist, community paediatrician, physiotherapist, speech and language therapist, occupational therapist, school nurse team etc), to ensure that we meet the needs of all children effectively. Parents and children are actively involved from the very beginning and we value this support.
